Cannabis Training Techniques

Training your cannabis plants can dramatically increase yield by creating a more even canopy and exposing more bud sites to direct light. Here are the most effective training techniques for both indoor and outdoor grows.

Low Stress Training (LST)

LST involves gently bending and tying branches to create a flat, even canopy. This exposes lower bud sites to more light without the stress of cutting the plant. Use soft plant ties and start early in veg when stems are still flexible.

Topping and FIMming

Topping removes the main growth tip, causing the plant to develop two main colas instead of one. FIMming (which stands for 'F I Missed') removes about 75% of the new growth tip and can produce 4+ new tops. Both techniques should be done during veg when the plant has at least 4-5 nodes.

SCROG (Screen of Green)

SCROG uses a horizontal screen placed above the canopy. As branches grow through the screen, they're tucked back under to create a perfectly flat canopy. This maximizes light distribution and can significantly increase yield per square foot. Best used with topped plants and a 2-4 week veg extension.
