Proper nutrition is critical for healthy cannabis plants. Understanding what your plants need at each stage of growth will help you maximize yield, potency, and terpene production. This guide covers everything from basic NPK ratios to advanced feeding strategies.
Understanding NPK
NPK stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). During vegetative growth, cannabis needs more nitrogen for leaf and stem development. In flowering, the plant shifts to needing more phosphorus and potassium for bud production. A typical veg ratio might be 3-1-2, while flower shifts to 1-3-3.
pH Management
pH is the single most important factor in nutrient uptake. In soil, maintain pH between 6.0-6.5. In hydroponic or coco systems, target 5.5-6.0. Outside these ranges, nutrients become locked out even if they're present in your solution. Always pH your water after adding nutrients.
Feeding Schedule
Start clones at 1/4 strength nutrients. Increase to 1/2 strength after the first week, then full strength once plants are established and growing vigorously. During flower, increase phosphorus and potassium while reducing nitrogen. Flush with plain water for the last 1-2 weeks before harvest.
Common Deficiencies
Nitrogen deficiency shows as yellowing of lower leaves. Phosphorus deficiency causes dark green or purple leaves. Potassium deficiency shows as brown, crispy leaf edges. Calcium deficiency appears as brown spots on leaves. Most deficiencies are actually caused by pH being out of range, so check pH first before adding more nutrients.
