Cannabis Watering Guide

Proper watering is one of the most fundamental aspects of cannabis cultivation, and one of the most common areas where growers make mistakes. This guide covers everything from basic watering frequency to advanced irrigation strategies.

How Often to Water

The frequency depends on your medium, pot size, plant size, and environment. In soil, water when the top inch of medium is dry. In coco, you may need to water daily or even twice daily in flower. The lift test is reliable — pick up the pot; if it's light, it's time to water.

pH and Water Quality

Always pH your water after adding nutrients. Soil: 6.0-6.5. Coco/hydro: 5.5-6.0. Use a reliable pH meter (not strips) and calibrate it regularly. If you're on well water, get it tested. Municipal water should be left out for 24 hours or run through a carbon filter to remove chloramine.

Common Watering Mistakes

Overwatering is the number one killer of cannabis plants. Signs include droopy leaves that feel thick and heavy (as opposed to underwatering where leaves are thin and papery). Water thoroughly until you get 10-20% runoff, then wait for the medium to dry back before watering again.
