Jack Herer
Breeder: Sensi Seeds (Ben Dronkers)
Named after the legendary cannabis activist and author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, Jack Herer holds the all-time record of 14 Cannabis Cup wins. Released in 1994, it was approved as a recognized medical-grade strain by Dutch pharmacies — a rare distinction. Ben Dronkers has publicly stated it is his all-time favorite strain. Jack Herer is one of very few widely available strains where terpinolene is the dominant terpene. Jack Herer was created by Sensi Seeds in the Netherlands in the mid-1990s and named in honor of the American cannabis activist and author of 'The Emperor Wears No Clothes.' The strain was engineered to bridge cerebral sativa elevation with heavy indica resin production, and it became one of the few cannabis cultivars officially distributed through Dutch pharmacies as a recognized medical-grade strain. Its genetic composition—approximately 50% Haze, 37.5% Northern Lights #5, and 12.5% Skunk #1—gives it a similar architecture to Super Silver Haze and Mango Haze. The terpene profile is led by terpinolene (relatively rare as a dominant terpene), followed by ocimene and myrcene, producing its distinctive fresh pine-citrus aroma that reads as clean and bright rather than earthy or fuel-forward. Jack Herer has served as a foundational parent for numerous successful crosses including Jack Flash, Cinderella 99, Jack Haze, Lemon Jack, and Blue Jack City.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Haze x Northern Lights #5 x Skunk #1
Initial crosses were made by Neville Schoenmakers. Seedfinder lists (Northern Lights #5 x Haze C) x (Skunk #1 x Haze C). NL5 is Purest Indica x Hawaiian. Skunk #1 is (Afghanistan x Colombia) x Mexico. Haze C is from the original Haze Brothers line. Four distinct phenotypes are recognized, from indica-dominant (Pheno-B, under 60 days) to sativa-dominant (Pheno-A, up to 13 weeks).
Terpene Profile
Terpinolene — Herbal, woody, slightly floral; 30–40% of total terpenes
Caryophyllene — Peppery, spicy warmth
Pinene — Sharp pine and resin
Aroma: Pine, spice, and earth with sweet woody undertones. Some phenotypes express more citrus or lemon-incense.
Flavor: Earthy pine with spicy pepper on inhale, woody sweet exhale. Lingering herbal-incense aftertaste.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Rapid. Cerebral effects arrive within minutes.
Focused, energetic, creative. Widely regarded as a 'functional' sativa that sharpens focus rather than producing couch-lock. A stratospheric cerebral high underpinned by a body buzz.
Duration: 2–3 hours

Grower's Notes
Jack Herer is one of the most phenotypically diverse cultivars a grower will encounter. Sensi Seeds' original cross of Haze × Northern Lights #5 × Skunk #1 produces four recognized phenotypes (A through D), ranging from towering sativa spires to compact indica bushes. Understanding which pheno you are running is the single most important variable in planning a successful grow.
Stretch and Structure
Expect 60–100% height increase after the flip to 12/12, with the bulk occurring in the first three weeks of flower. The Haze-dominant pheno-A can multiply its vegetated height by five times and should be flipped small (10–15 cm) or managed aggressively with SCROG. The indica-leaning pheno-B adds a more manageable 100–200% and finishes fastest. Untrained plants tend to form a single dominant cola with significant internode spacing; topping at node 3–4 during veg and applying LST before the stretch begins is essential for canopy management. Indoor heights typically finish between 100–160 cm with training (up to 180 cm for pheno-A). Outdoors, plants can exceed 2 meters.
Flower Time
9–10 weeks from flip for balanced and Haze-dominant phenotypes. The NL-dominant pheno-B can finish as early as 55–60 days; pheno-A requires the full 70 days. Always verify maturity with a loupe—target 85–90% cloudy trichomes with 5–10% amber. Harvesting with more amber shifts the effect toward sedation, which undermines this strain's signature cerebral clarity. Start daily trichome checks at day 55.
Yield
450–600 g/m² indoors with proper training and lighting (SCROG, topping, or SOG). Untrained single-cola plants yield significantly less, which fuels the outdated myth that Jack Herer is a low yielder. Outdoors in Mediterranean climates, expect 400–600 g/plant. The key is distributing production across multiple bud sites rather than relying on one apical cola.
Nutrients and Media
Moderate-to-heavy feeder during flower. Run EC at 1.2–1.4 through veg, ramp to 1.9–2.1 at peak bloom (weeks 3–5 of flower), then taper to 1.2 for the final flush. Unlike pure indicas, Jack Herer continues metabolizing nitrogen through weeks 2–3 of flower during the stretch—watch for pale new growth and supplement N before full deficiency symptoms appear. Performs well in soil (pH 6.0–6.5), coco/perlite (pH 5.8–6.2), and hydro. Coco is widely considered the best compromise of growth speed and manageability. In hydro, stem diameter can become remarkably thick. Flush with plain pH-adjusted water for the final 7–10 days.
Environment and Light
Optimal daytime temps of 23–26°C (73–79°F) with a 6–10°C night drop in late flower. More temperature-sensitive than pure indicas—below 18°C slows trichome maturation noticeably. Humidity should follow a standard VPD ramp: 60–65% in early flower, 45–50% through peak bloom, and 40–45% in the final two weeks. Full-spectrum LED or HPS at 600–800 PPFD during peak flower. An 18/6 photoperiod for veg and 12/12 for flower is standard. Strong airflow through the canopy is non-negotiable, particularly for the denser indica phenotypes.
Color and Bud Structure
Buds range from light to medium green with bright orange pistils. Pheno-A produces long strings of inflated, highly resinous calyxes—the classic 'catalogue Jack.' Pheno-B forms dense, angular knot-shaped clusters around nodes. Pheno-C presents spiky, voluminous, fuzzy buds. Pheno-D produces node-stacking indica-style buds with extreme trichome coverage that can appear silver. All phenotypes display heavy trichome frost; resin production is unusually high for a sativa-dominant cultivar, rivaling many pure indicas.
Pest and Disease
The NL#5 and Skunk genetics confer reasonable baseline mold resistance, and the strain shows natural resilience to common pests and powdery mildew. However, the dense bud formations of indica-leaning phenotypes trap moisture and are prone to bud rot in the final weeks if humidity is not strictly controlled below 50%. Maintain strong airflow through the canopy and defoliate strategically. Spider mites are the most common pest threat under warm, dry conditions—regular IPM scouting is recommended.
Wash Data
Jack Herer's prolific trichome production makes it an excellent candidate for solventless extraction. The large, stalked capitate trichomes wash cleanly in ice water. Fresh-frozen material processed through 73µ and 90µ bags yields quality full-melt grades. Pheno-D is particularly prized by hash makers for its extreme resin content and hash-like terpene profile. Expect competitive wash returns in the 3–5% range from quality dried flower, higher from fresh-frozen.
Drying and Curing
Slow dry at 15–18°C and 55–60% RH for 10–14 days minimum. The dominant terpenes—terpinolene and ocimene—are among the most volatile in cannabis and evaporate rapidly under high-temperature drying. A rushed dry destroys the signature pine-citrus profile. Jar cure at 60–65% RH, burping daily for two weeks minimum. Four weeks produces good results; six weeks significantly improves terpene complexity. The ocimene top note that gives fresh Jack Herer its almost medicinal-clean freshness needs time in the jar to stabilize.
History & Origin
