Peanut Butter Breath

Also known as: PBB, PB Breath, Peanut Butter, Peanut Breath

Breeder: ThugPug Genetics (Gromer Jeffries), founded circa 2016, Michigan

Peanut Butter Breath is arguably one of the top 5 most influential cannabis strains of the last decade, defining the nutty/earthy terpene profile for an entire generation of consumers. Bred by ThugPug Genetics around 2017-2018, it gained widespread recognition for its distinctive roasted-peanut-butter aroma and potent body-focused effects. PBB proved that savory terpenes (funky, garlicky, gym-sock-adjacent notes) could be commercial best-sellers when paired with extreme resin production. The strain is legendary in the solventless/hash community because its trichome heads are large, sandy, and detach easily. Contrary to some online claims, PBB did NOT win Leafly's 2019 Strain of the Year (that was Wedding Cake), but it earned significant competition hardware including 1st Place Indica at the 2019 Karma Cup.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Do-Si-Dos x Mendo Breath F2

Parent strains in encyclopedia:Do-Si-DosMendo Breath

Do-Si-Dos (Mother): Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) x Face Off OG. Indica-leaning hybrid, THC 19-30%. Contributes gassy, slightly sweet backbone, balanced potency, dense resinous bud structure, euphoric cerebral effects, and vibrant green/purple coloration. Mendo Breath F2 "Studly Spewright" (Father): OGKB (OG Kush Breath) x Mendo Montage, originally bred by Gage Green Group (Mendocino County). 70/30 indica-dominant. This specific F2 male is the single most important plant in ThugPug's entire breeding program — the foundation of Garlic Breath, Meat Breath, Sophie's Breath, Mule Fuel, and dozens more. Contributes earthy, dessert-like richness, physical relaxation, vanilla/caramel undertones, enhanced trichome production, and the signature stink factor. Gromer found this male while working as a genetics tester for Gage Green Group.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Limonene0.8-1.5% — Contributes nutty richness (not citrus-forward in this context); mood-lifting

DOMINANT

Beta-Caryophyllene0.2-1.2% — Spicy, peppery, woody; the funk backbone; anti-inflammatory, binds CB2 receptors

SECONDARY

Myrcene0.2-0.5% — Herbal, earthy, musky; the sedation driver

SECONDARY

LinaloolTrace — Floral/lavender; calming

SECONDARY

HumuleneTrace — Earthy/hoppy; appetite suppression

SECONDARY

ValenceneTrace — Citrus; contributes to the nutty mouthfeel in combination with limonene and caryophyllene

Aroma: Primary wave of rich, nutty earthiness — unmistakably peanut butter. Pungent herbal/savory kick; sharp and gassy. Fresh pine hints, aged wood/cedar, subtle vanilla-caramel from the Mendo Breath lineage. Overall character is like walking into an old-fashioned pantry with roasted peanuts and fresh soil.

Flavor: Inhale: rich peanut butter, herbal, woody, subtle citrus brightness. Exhale: peppery spice, earthy nuttiness, piney finish. Aftertaste: creamy, savory, with lingering warm nuttiness. The peanut butter character comes from the deliberate balance of limonene, valencene, and caryophyllene — no single terpene produces that nutty character alone.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Gentle cerebral uplift, euphoria, and mood elevation within 0-10 minutes. Creeping high — start low, wait 15-20 minutes before redosing as it has a reputation for sneaking up on inexperienced users.

Full-body relaxation settles in at 10-45 minutes with tension melting and creative yet calm headspace. Progresses to deep sedation, couch-lock, sleepiness, and appetite stimulation. Best for evening/nighttime use.

Duration: 60-75 minutes for new users; experienced users report longer-lasting body effects.

TRAINING IS THE SINGLE MOST CRITICAL ASPECT — the strain produces extremely dense buds that are a serious mold/botrytis risk if the canopy isn't opened up. Topping is mandatory — top above the 4th or 5th node to multiply bud sites and reduce apical dominance.

LST

begin early in veg to spread the canopy wide, PBB responds very well. SCROG/Trellis: highly recommended, use a trellis net to spread branches into an even canopy, add stakes or second trellis layer for support as buds swell in late flower. Defoliation: light-to-moderate, remove lower leaves and interior fan leaves to improve airflow. Aggressive defoliation around week 6 of flower is recommended but don't strip too much. NOT recommended for SOG — plants grow too tall and prominent.

KNOWN PHENOTYPES

Pheno #1 is short, compact, fast-flowering, indica-dominant expression. Pheno #2 is long, stretched, slow-flowering, more sativa-like structure. Both produce the signature terpene profile but structure and flowering time differ significantly — plan garden layout accordingly.

Nutrient Management

FEEDING: Moderate feeder overall. EC: early veg 0.4-0.6, late veg 0.8-1.2, early flower 1.3, peak flower 1.3-1.5, then taper to flush. Keep nitrogen moderate throughout — excess N causes leafy growth and suppresses terpene development. Vigorous root system that drinks heavily but MUST allow soil to dry between feeds. Never overwater seedlings. Add extra potassium in week 8 to support dense bud structure.

Pest and Disease Resistance

AIRFLOW AND MOLD PREVENTION (CRITICAL): PBB's #1 growing challenge is mold/botrytis from bud density. Mandatory high-speed oscillating fans both above and below the canopy. Do NOT allow branches to touch each other — spacing is non-negotiable. Humidity must drop to 35-45% by week 7 onward. In outdoor environments, must be harvested before fall rains (mid-October). Use airy soil/medium to avoid moisture retention at the root zone. Inspect inner bud sites regularly for early signs of botrytis. Consider running a dehumidifier 24/7 in late flower.

Flowering Time and Harvest

HARVEST TIMING: Wait for 10-20% amber trichomes to lock in the heavy body buzz. Harvesting at mostly-cloudy gives a more balanced, less sedating effect. Monitor closely due to varied flower times between phenotypes.

Wash and Extraction

HASH/EXTRACTION: PBB is legendary in the solventless community — trichome heads are large, sandy, and detach easily. Excellent ice water hash yields. High-quality rosin production. The strain's 4%+ fresh-frozen yield makes it a commercial hash crop favorite.

SEED NOTES

ThugPug releases regular seeds — must cull males. Third-party feminized versions exist but vary in authenticity.

OUTDOOR NOTES

Prefers dry, sunny Mediterranean climates. NOT suitable for humid climates without aggressive mold management. Full sunlight improves flavor and potency significantly. Support branches from week 6 of flower onward. Great for discreet outdoor grows due to short height (pheno #1). Must be protected from early October rains.
