Bred by Dave Crockett of Crockett Family Farms and distributed through DNA Genetics, the cultivar crosses Crockett's Banana Kush with a strawberry-selected phenotype of Bubble Gum from Serious Seeds—a pairing that delivered one of the heaviest trichome producers the modern market has seen.

Flowering runs 56 to 70 days, with the majority of phenotypes finishing at 63 days (9 weeks). Some growers push to 10 weeks for additional bud swell and resin deposition, particularly when targeting solventless extraction—DNA Genetics notes that the extra week can pack on meaningful additional trichome density, though terpene character shifts toward heavier, more sedative territory. Trichome inspection is essential: the ideal harvest window for balanced effect and peak terpene expression is when heads are predominantly cloudy with 10-20% amber.

Nutrient demands are medium to heavy. The plant is a consistent feeder that responds well to elevated phosphorus and potassium during bloom, though it can show sensitivity to overfeeding early in flower. Growers report success across media—organic living soil, coco-perlite blends (70:30 is common), and full hydroponic systems all produce excellent results. Pest and disease resistance is moderate to good. The plant's sturdy indica frame handles environmental stress well, and genetic resilience to common pests is noted. However, the extreme bud density in late flower makes airflow management and humidity control critical for botrytis prevention—particularly in the final three weeks when colas swell dramatically and internal moisture can accumulate. Defoliation of interior fan leaves during weeks 3-4 of flower is standard practice.

For hash makers, Strawberry Banana is a benchmark cultivar. Fresh-frozen wash yields of 4-6% are consistently reported, with elite phenotypes exceeding these figures. The trichome morphology features favorable head-to-stalk ratios and brittle stalks that separate cleanly during ice water agitation—heads peak in the 90-120 µm range. The strain won 1st Place in the High Times 2016 Rosin Cup and remains a top choice for solventless production. Flower rosin returns of 15-25% from cured material are typical.

Drying should proceed in a dark room at 55-65°F with 50-60% relative humidity. The dense bud structure means patience is essential—a 10-14 day hang dry until stems snap cleanly produces the best results. Cure in sealed glass jars with daily burping for the first week, then 2-3 times weekly for a minimum of 2-4 weeks.
