Zlurpee
Breeder: Prime Cuts Nursery
Zlurpee is a Prime Cuts Nursery exclusive bred and pheno-hunted in-house by founder John Houston. A cross of the original Zkittlez (Z3 phenotype) with a proprietary Purple Punch selection, it produces massive, frosty white flowers with a pungent candy nose reminiscent of a freshly opened bag of Skittles. The plant grows short and stalky with tight internodal spacing and an exceptionally fast flowering period, making it ideal for SOG setups or compressed outdoor schedules. Zlurpee also serves as a parent of Candiez (#34 x Zlurpee), bred by The Keep Motive using two Prime Cuts in-house genetics. Zlurpee combines the legendary candy-fruit terpene profile of Zkittlez with the dense resin production and purple coloration of Purple Punch, creating a compact, fast-finishing plant with exceptional bag appeal. The pungent \"bag of Zkittlez\" nose is the defining trait — nothing in the lineage comes closer to the classic Zkittlez terpene expression. Both parents are California competition staples, with Zkittlez winning the 2016 Emerald Cup and Purple Punch earning High Times Cannabis Cup recognition.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Zkittlez x Purple Punch
The mother is Zkittlez (Z3 phenotype), the famous Grape Ape x Grapefruit cross known for its intense fruit-candy terpene profile. The father is a proprietary Purple Punch selection (Larry OG x Granddaddy Purple), chosen for its grape-forward sweetness and compact growth structure. Both parents are known for exceptional flavor, and Zlurpee concentrates their shared candy-fruit profile.
Terpene Profile
Myrcene — Sweet, fruity foundation that drives the candy-forward flavor and contributes to relaxation
Caryophyllene — Subtle spicy warmth beneath the sweetness; provides gentle anti-inflammatory effects
Limonene — Citrus brightness that lifts the grape-candy sweetness and supports mood elevation
Aroma: Intensely sweet candy — smells like an opened bag of Zkittlez with concentrated grape, berry, and tropical fruit notes. An earthy, herbaceous undercurrent gives it depth. The nose is loud and immediately recognizable.
Flavor: Grape candy and sweet berry on the inhale with a fruity, almost juice-like mouthfeel. The mid-palate offers earthy sweetness and candied nut undertones. The exhale is clean and sugary with lasting fruit flavor.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Gentle euphoria settles in within minutes, lifting mood and easing tension without jarring intensity.
Relaxing and happy with a warm body buzz that deepens over time. The headspace stays pleasant and euphoric without heavy cerebral stimulation. Higher doses push toward sleepiness and couch-lock.
Duration: 2–3 hours. The relaxation builds steadily and tapers into drowsiness.
Commonly Reported Uses
Grower's Notes
Zlurpee is a Prime Cuts Nursery exclusive crossing the original Z3 (Zkittlez) with their in-house Purple Punch pheno. Both parents are compact, indica-dominant plants, and Zlurpee inherits that architecture emphatically — expect a short, stocky frame with tight internodal spacing. Stretch is minimal; most phenos stay well under 100 cm indoors even with a full veg cycle. This makes Zlurpee an excellent candidate for SOG or SCROG setups where vertical space is limited.
Structure and Training
The plant develops strong lateral branching that responds well to LST and topping. Top at the 5th or 6th node during early veg to create an even canopy, then tie branches outward. Defoliation is important — both parents produce dense foliage that can block airflow and light to lower sites. Perform strategic leaf removal at days 21 and 42 of flower, but avoid aggressive stripping after week 3 of bloom.
Flowering and Yield
Zlurpee finishes fast at 7-8 weeks, one of the shorter windows among premium hybrids. Indoor yields are high for its compact size, with growers reporting 400-500 g/m2 under 600W-class LEDs at 700-900 umol/m2/s PPFD. Outdoors, the short flower period makes it ideal for later planting schedules or regions with early fall weather. Check trichomes from week 6 onward — this strain can finish faster than you expect (Purple Punch's Alpha Cut has been known to finish in under 50 days at 12/12).
Nutrients and Media
Zlurpee inherits Purple Punch's moderate feeding preference. Start at 75% of recommended nutrient doses and work up. Overfeeding suppresses terpene expression — exactly the opposite of what you want with a candy-terp cultivar. Nitrogen-heavy feeds in veg, phosphorus and potassium emphasis in flower. Coco-perlite blends (pH 5.8-6.1) or well-draining soil (pH 6.0-6.5) both work well. Flush with plain water for 7-10 days before harvest to let the Zkittlez candy profile come through cleanly.
Environment
Daytime temps of 21-26C in veg, dropping to 18-24C in flower. VPD targets of 0.8-1.0 kPa in veg and 1.2-1.5 kPa in bloom. Humidity management is critical: 55-65% in veg, 45-55% early flower, then 40-45% from week 6 onward, non-negotiable. Both parents produce extremely dense buds that trap moisture, making Zlurpee a botrytis risk if RH climbs in late flower. Strong indirect airflow is essential; dehumidifiers are recommended in humid climates.
Color Expression
With two purple-dominant parents, Zlurpee has strong genetic predisposition for anthocyanin production. To maximize color, drop nighttime temps to 15-18C during weeks 6-8 of flower. The day/night differential triggers anthocyanin synthesis, pushing buds and sugar leaves toward deep purples and blues. Unlike strains that only purple under extreme cold stress, Zlurpee's genetics mean color expression is nearly guaranteed with even a modest temperature swing.
Bud Structure and Trim
Expect golf-ball-dense colas coated in white frost — the \"massive white frosty flowers\" that Prime Cuts describes. Both parents pass on excellent calyx-to-leaf ratios, so trimming is fast with minimal sugar leaf waste. The buds photograph beautifully and have exceptional bag appeal.
Pest and Disease
The #1 risk is botrytis (bud rot) driven by that dense bud structure. Inspect large colas weekly by gently parting them; grey or brown fuzz inside means immediate removal. Spider mites, aphids, and thrips are standard risks. Preventive IPM (neem in veg, predatory insects in flower) is strongly recommended. The dense canopy also warrants proactive powdery mildew monitoring.
Wash Data
Growers considering solventless extraction should do a test wash first. Purple Punch, despite looking frosty, is documented as a poor washer — its trichome heads often fail to detach cleanly from stalks. Zkittlez trichome morphology varies by pheno. Put 10g of fresh-frozen material in a mason jar with ice water, agitate, and check whether heads separate before committing a full harvest to wash.
Drying and Curing
The candy terpene profile (driven by limonene, caryophyllene, and myrcene) is volatile and degrades with heat or fast drying. Hang whole branches in a dark room at 60-65F and 55-60% RH for 10-14 days. Never rush with fans on buds. Cure in glass jars at 58-62% RH, burping daily for weeks 1-2, then every 2-3 days. A minimum 4-week cure is essential — Z-family cultivars typically peak in flavor complexity between days 21-35 of cure, after which monoterpene loss begins eroding top notes.
History & Origin
Bred in-house at Prime Cuts Nursery in Northern California by founder John Houston. The cross paired the original Z3 Zkittlez phenotype with a selected Purple Punch male to create a fast-finishing, candy-flavored indica-dominant hybrid. Zlurpee became a staple of the Prime Cuts clone menu and was later used as a parent in the Candiez cross (#34 x Zlurpee). The strain remains primarily available through Prime Cuts Nursery's clone distribution.
