Transplanting Cannabis Clones

Transplanting is one of the most critical steps in growing from clones. Done correctly, your plants will barely notice the move. Done poorly, you can set your grow back by weeks or even lose plants. Here's how to do it right.

When to Transplant

Transplant when roots are visible at the bottom of the plug or cube and the clone is showing new growth (usually 2-4 days after arrival). Don't wait too long — rootbound clones suffer more transplant shock than ones transplanted at the right time.

Pot Size Selection

For indoor grows, most growers go from clone plug to 1-gallon pot, then to final container (3-7 gallon depending on veg time). For outdoor, you can go straight to a larger container (5-15 gallon) or into the ground. Fabric pots promote air pruning and prevent root circling.

Avoiding Transplant Shock

Pre-moisten your medium before transplanting. Handle roots gently — don't shake off the existing medium. Water in immediately after transplanting with plain pH'd water or very light nutrients. Keep humidity higher than normal for 2-3 days after transplant. Avoid intense light for the first 24-48 hours.
