Melonade

Melonade earned its reputation on the competition circuit before most growers ever popped a seed. Bred by Tristan Langwinski of Midwest Best — who reversed a Lemon Tree #11 clone and dusted the pollen onto a Watermelon Zkittlez female from Dying Breed Seeds — the cultivar was pheno-hunted in collaboration with Alien Labs and promptly took first-place Sativa at the 2018 High Times Central Valley Cannabis Cup. That pedigree shows in the garden: Melonade is a cultivar that rewards attentive growers with exceptional resin coverage and terpene intensity, but punishes sloppy environmental control with bud rot in its notoriously dense colas.

In structure, Melonade reads more sativa than its medium stature suggests. Plants develop strong lateral branching with medium-to-long internodal spacing and broad, light-green fan leaves. Indoors, expect a final height of 90–150 cm depending on veg time, or up to 180–220 cm outdoors when left unrestrained. The stretch after the 12/12 flip is moderate — typically 1.5 to 2x — and responds exceptionally well to early topping and low-stress training. Most experienced growers run SCROG nets to create an even canopy of cola sites and maximize light penetration to lower bud sites. The bract-to-leaf ratio is favorable, which aids both airflow and post-harvest trimming efficiency.

Flowering runs 8–10 weeks indoors, though two distinct phenotypic lanes influence timing. Lemon-dominant expressions tend to prefer 63–70 days for full terpene development and can tolerate slightly higher EC. Melon-candy phenotypes express sweeter aromatics earlier and may finish closer to 56–60 days, though their denser flowers demand extra airflow vigilance. Regardless of phenotype, the harvest window opens when trichomes shift from clear to predominantly milky, with 10–15% amber. Outdoor growers in Mediterranean climates can expect to chop in early to mid-October.

Yield is generous. Indoor growers consistently report 450–650 g/m² under quality LEDs at 600–800 µmol/m²/s PPFD, while outdoor plants in full sun and 5–7 gallon containers reliably produce 500–900 g/plant. The cultivar is a heavy feeder during veg, hungry for nitrogen to fuel its vigorous branching. But here lies the most common pitfall: nitrogen must be cut aggressively within the first week of seeing pistils. The cultivar is unusually sensitive to excess nitrogen during mid-to-late flower, which delays ripening and can mute the terpene profile. Transition to a phosphorus- and potassium-rich bloom formula early, and supplement calcium-magnesium from week two of veg onward, especially in coco or RO water systems.

The bud structure is a showpiece. Mature flowers are spade-shaped and medium-dense with swollen, stacking calyxes in lime to forest green, frequently accented with splashes of magenta or near-purple when night temperatures drop during late bloom. Fiery orange pistils contrast against a thick, greasy blanket of capitate-stalked trichomes that give the buds a wet, glistening frost under light. This heavy resin production — Melonade reportedly carries roughly 30% more total terpene volume than comparable sweet hybrids like Wedding Cake or Zkittlez — makes it a strong candidate for solventless extraction. Ice water hash yields of 3–8% from fresh-frozen material are typical for trichome-dense cultivars of this caliber, with hash-to-rosin press conversion rates of 70–90%.
