Not all clones are created equal. Knowing what to look for — and what to avoid — when buying cannabis clones can save you an entire harvest. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Look for HLVD Testing
This is the single most important factor. HLVd can reduce your THC content by 30-50% and significantly impact yield. Always buy from nurseries that PCR test every clone. If a supplier can't show you test results, walk away.
Check Root Development
Healthy clones should have well-developed white roots. Yellow or brown roots indicate stress or disease. Roots should be visible at the bottom of the plug or cube. Avoid clones with sparse or underdeveloped root systems.
Inspect for Pests
Check the underside of leaves for spider mites, aphids, and other pests. Look at the stem base for fungus gnats. A single infested clone can introduce pests to your entire garden. Reputable nurseries maintain strict IPM programs.
Verify Genetics
Ask where the genetics come from. Reputable nurseries source directly from breeders and can verify the genetic lineage of every strain. Be wary of nurseries selling 'elite' cuts at suspiciously low prices — you may not be getting what you think.
