Cannabis Clone Problems & Troubleshooting

Fix common issues fast and save your plants Cannabis clones are generally hardy, but issues can arise — especially during rooting and transplanting. Here's how to identify and fix the most common problems.

Wilting After Transplant

Cause: Transplant shock — roots haven't established in new medium yet. Fix: Keep humidity high (60-70%), reduce light intensity for 2-3 days, water lightly, avoid nutrients for first 3-5 days. Most clones recover within 48 hours.

Yellowing Lower Leaves

Cause: Normal during rooting — the plant cannibalizes lower leaves to fuel root growth. If happening after transplant, may indicate nitrogen deficiency. Fix: During rooting, remove yellowed leaves to prevent mold. After transplant, begin light nitrogen feeding at 25-50% strength.

Slow or No Rooting

Cause: Temperature too low, humidity too low, or expired rooting hormone. Fix: Ensure 72-78°F root zone temp (use heat mat), 70-80% humidity under dome, and fresh rooting gel. Some strains are naturally slower rooters — wait a full 14 days before worrying.

Stem Rot

Cause: Too much moisture in the rooting medium. The stem base turns brown/mushy. Fix: Medium should be moist, not soaking wet. Ensure drainage. If rot has started, re-cut above the rot line and re-dip in rooting hormone.

Stretching / Leggy Growth

Cause: Not enough light intensity during veg stage. Fix: Move lights closer or increase intensity gradually. Top the plant to encourage bushy lateral growth.

Reduced Vigor / Stunting

Cause: Could indicate HLVD infection. Plants grow slowly, internode spacing is tight, stems are brittle. Fix: PCR test the plant. If positive, destroy it and sanitize your grow area. This is why buying from tested nurseries is critical — you never want to deal with HLVD after it's in your garden.
